12. Whitepods, Switzerland

Half tent, half mountain hut, these Swiss structures dot the slopes in the Alps, offering jaw-dropping views from their bay windows. Taking the tent-like geodesic structure as its muse, these shelters are constructed as a network of triangles, to give them strength against the snow that surrounds them come winter. They even offer a terrace, marrying the best of the outdoor camping experience with the warmth and convenience of an Alpine hut. More info: www.whitepod.com

13. Camp among wild wolves, Michigan, USA

While Yellowstone National Park may be famous for successfully reintroducing wolves, there is actually a better spot to camp out and experience these creatures in the USA – Isle Royale. Officially the least visited National Park in the USA, it gets fewer visitors each year than Great Smoky Mountains National Park gets in a single day. Seemingly floating in Lake Superior, it is 72 km in length and 14 km wide, has no roads but does boast several campsites. Some have facilities, and many can only be accessed by the water. Isle Royale is populated by moose that first swam across from the mainland over a hundred years ago, later joined by their natural predators – wolves. Now, both make for a unique wildlife-watching experience. And, as the sun sets, you can snuggle in your tent and listen to these primeval canines howling at the moon.
